£1.8 million contract for new mortuary
Bournemouth Borough Council has awarded Midas Construction a £1.8 million contract to provide a new modern mortuary in the town.
Preparatory works have started around the existing facility, which will remain fully operational during building work. Midas will then begin construction of the new public mortuary, which will provide all necessary services in one location, both for staff and for bereaved families.
In particular, it will include improved facilities for post-mortems and forensic investigations, which have previously had to be carried out outside of the borough. The project is expected to be completed in January 2011.
Peter Grayson, corporate property service manager at Bournemouth Borough Council, said: “We are looking forward to the construction phase of the project, which will fulfill the high design and quality requirements of such a bespoke facility.”
Paul Strachan, divisional director of Midas Construction’s Southern Division, said: “We are pleased to be working with Bournemouth Borough Council and Her Majesty''''s Coroner''''s Office to provide a dignified post-mortem facility.
It will be located in surroundings that will be preserved and enhanced as a peaceful green space.
“The contract also builds on our reputation in the public sector.”
The new facility is jointly funded by Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset councils.
