Vision for a world-class waterfront moves forward
Southampton City Council has begun the process of searching for a developer to transform the city’s Royal Pier area into a world-class waterfront.
Last week the council’s cabinet approved the first steps towards redeveloping one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
Councillor Royston Smith, cabinet member for economic development, said: “For years residents have been waiting for something special to happen to the waterfront. Residents have told us they want access to the waterfront to enjoy watching the ships pass by and so they can feel reconnected to the city’s maritime past.
“We have listened and responded with an ambitious redevelopment proposal which, with the other exciting developments taking place in the city, is set to make Southampton one of the most exciting places to live in the country.
“We want to open up the waterfront to our residents, attract high quality development and secure the boat show for years to come in Southampton.
“The council is demonstrating that even in these difficult times it is determined to help improve the quality of its residents’ lives, by bringing them more jobs and prosperity and to creating a magnet that is irresistible to visitors. We will continue to explore every opportunity for our residents.”
This first big step is for the three main landowners, Southampton City Council, Associated British Ports and the Crown Estate, to create a landowners’ agreement, which forms the basis for the parties working together to achieve the redevelopment.
Then the landowners will invite developers to put forward their ideas as to how the redevelopment might look.
These ideas must include improving Mayflower Park to make the waterfront more accessible to the public and ensure that it is a high quality public place that residents and visitors can enjoy.
This exciting development will also provide an improved permanent home for the Southampton Boat Show.
