First look inside The Hepworth Wakefield
Wakefield’s major new art gallery, The Hepworth Wakefield, opens its doors to the public for the first time today (Wednesday 31 March) from 5-9pm. The partially-complete gallery, which will open next spring, is taking part in Wakefield’s Artwalk next Wednesday, and will be a permanent fixture on the Artwalk thereafter.
This will be the first opportunity for the general public to have a look inside the stunning new gallery, designed by award-winning architect David Chipperfield.
Cllr Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for culture, said: “I’m delighted to be able to welcome the public to The Hepworth Wakefield, which is nearing completion and is really beginning to take shape inside. The Artwalk is a great idea and it makes perfect sense to link in the gallery.”
Simon Wallis, director of the Hepworth Wakefield commented: “The Artwalk is a testament to Wakefield’s vibrant arts and cultural scene. Visitors travel from all over Yorkshire to enjoy the sights and sounds of the visual and performing arts, showcased in 14 galleries, restaurants and shops across the city. We look forward to Artwalk visitors bringing our new building to life as we prepare our opening in spring 2011.”
The building, which boasts an internal floor area of 4,900 square meters, includes 10 galleries, a shop, café and learning centre and is expected to attract over 140,000 visitors per year.
The Hepworth Wakefield will be open to the public as part of the Artwalk on the following dates in 2010: 31 March, 26 May, 28 July, 29 September, 24 November.
